And Then There Was.
The National Forum for Black Public
Administrators (NFBPA) was founded following the successful production
of a national conference for black public administrators in April of 1983,
in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The excitement and enthusiasm generated
during the "FORUM" provided the impetus for the creation of a
new organization dedicated to strengthening black leadership in public
service.
NFBPA enjoyed a four-year incubation
following its legal incorporation in the State of Florida. During
that time, the organization existed as a program of Public Technology,
Inc., a non-profit entity dedicated to assisting local governments in
developing innovative solutions to management and service delivery
dilemmas. Achievements during the early years included the
development of a quarterly newsletter, "The Forum," and
production of an annual conference, the FORUM. In 1986, another
significant achievement was realized - the chartering of NFBPA's first
local affiliate. This step signaled the beginning of a period of
tremendous institutional growth.
Today, NFBPA has emerged as the nation's
premier association of black appointment managers and executives with over
2,500 members and 47 chapters serving public organization throughout the
United States. NFBPA members are increasingly playing major roles in
influencing and executing policy decisions that effect the professional
and personal live of citizens in over 350 jurisdictions across the nation.
Organized in 1993, the Southern Piedmont Chapter of NFBPA is
one of the fastest growing chapters in the organization's fold. The Chapter
endeavors to meet the diverse needs of its
membership and contribute to the overall prosperity of the greater
Charlotte community. The Chapter sponsors local and regional professional
development seminars, provides student scholarships,
engages in community service initiatives, conducts regular chapter
meetings, and helps further promote and elevate the visibility of the
public sector professional.
